Tri Nguyen (Đàn Tranh)

Tri began studying the piano at age five and a half in Vietnam with French-trained teachers. After graduating from the Music Conservatory of Saigon, he continued his studies at the École Normale de Musique de Paris with great teachers such as Jacques Lagarde (himself a former student of Marguerite Long and Clara Haskil), then Ramzi Yassa, concert virtuoso trained in Moscow, with whom he discovered the great Russian school.
Born into a literati family in South Vietnam, strongly attached to its ancestral culture, his parents believed that studying the piano was not enough for his musical education, and found an old zither master with whom he began to study the instrument. Zither master Hai Bieu proved to be one of the last musicians belonging to the old school of Vietnamese music.
Thus, from an early age, Tri Nguyen divides his time between two cultures, two musical worlds: Western music and Ancient Vietnamese music.
Tri has performed in Vietnam, the United States, and Europe. He has collaborated with eminent artists from the United States, Canada, France, Scotland, Germany, Spain, Italy, Africa, Argentina, Venezuela, most of whom are Grammy and International Awards recipients. His music has been aired worldwide on major radio stations such as BBC Radio 3, M21 Spain, NPR – National Public Radio USA, Radio Canada, Concertzender FM Netherlands, National Radio Polski (Poland), Czech Republic Radio Proglas, France Culture, Protestant Frequency, Radio RMA, Radio RCF, Demain TV-France, Mundo Internacional Mexico, and many others.
His most recently released album, “Duos-Alone”, where Tri plays both the đàn-tranh and the piano, is a poignant final letter to his late mother, in which each track is a heartfelt story of his gratitude and love. “Duos-Alone” immediately received deeply emotional reviews from the press worldwide, moved by its unique blend of instruments and by the profound sincerity of the music.
Tri is currently working with guitar legend Sergio Puccini (the direct descendant of the great Giacomo Puccini himself) on their next album “Circle of Strings”, presenting the guitar and the đàn-tranh in a completely new light — with music from Argentina, Vietnam, Tangos, and of course, G. Puccini. A unique musical journey, never explored before, presented exclusively to the Argentine audience prior to the album’s official release.
This is his first trip to South America, and his first time performing in Argentina.
Since 2016, Tri has been a voting member of The Recording Academy / NARAS — also known as the Grammys.
